Default can't save due to sharing violation

This happens to me all the time and I have no idea why. I'm the only one
who is using this computer . . . no network, no other users. Yet for no
obvious reason and somewhat randomly I get that condition message. It sure
eats up a lot of time. I have to save the file under a different (temporary)
name, then do a reboot of my computer to clear the condition, then rename the
temporary file to get going again. What a pain. It's been happening to me
for many months now. I have a feeling that it may be connected with having
a lot of links between workbooks, but just what is happening has eluded me.
What's even more maddening is that it also happen to the backup files that
are created when I do a successful save. I won't know it's happened until
my backup program runs and is unable to erase a backup file it has copied to
another location. Pffft!
