Default Shrink text and return characters

The result of my formula will either be a single character or 9 characters
long. If it results in 1 character, my font in size 10 and everything is how
I want it. If it results in 9 characters, I would like the font to shrink to
fit (approximately font size 6) and wrap with 3 characters then a return,
then 3 more characters, then another return, then the last three characters.
I cannot get it to work with both shrink to fit, and wrap text. When I
manually insert return characters or use a formula that results in or points
to a return character, Excel changes the cell formula from shrink to fit to
wrap. Is there any way to achive this result without using VBA?
Thanks,
