Default Why does the hyphen symbol change size - width?

When you use the hyphen symbol, why do you get a short hyphen sometimes and
other times, it is wider?

Maybe you have an autocorrect entry set?

Tools|Autocorrect Options|Autocorrect tab.

And you're sure you're not thinking of MSWord?
Inside MSWord
Tools|Autocorrect Options|"Autoformat as you type" tab
