Default opening up an english excel sheet onto a french verions - problems with edate function

I am trying to open up an excel workbook which was created on an
english version of excel onto the french version. for some reason al
the "EDATE" functions don't work unless I retype them in small caps.
Does anyone have a clue why that happens and how to do a general update
rather than having to retype all these functions?

thanks.
