Default Is arithmetic on time data possible in Excel 2002?

I've imported a list of times (Hr:Min) into Excel from a Wordpad document.
Can Excel perform the following on this data?

Sum
Maximum
Minimum
Average

Yes, as long as they are numerical Excel can do this
Sometimes when you "import" dates and times from another program they are
seen as text
