Default conditional formatting

I'm trying to format cells based on the data in other "reference" cells -
that's no problem, I can do it with conditional formatting. However, I also
need to eventually delete the reference cells (not just hide them - they need
to be gone) while still keeping the formatting. Is there any way for me to
"Lock Down" the formatting so it doesn't change, even if the reference cells
do??
