how can I ask for data within a certain date range in a pivot table?

It all depends exactly what you are trying to do. If Date is a Row field, you could click on the dropdown for the field, untick Show All, which deselects all of the dates, then just put a check mark against the individual dates you want to see. You could right click on the Date field heading, and choose Group & OutlineGroupMonths or Years and MonthsOK You will then see the dates summarised by Month, or by Year and Month, and use the dropdown to select the month you want.
