Default validation list

If I have a cell (say A1) with a validation list and I have values in other
cells of the same column (A), when typing a letter into A1 Excel (2003)
offers the first value in column A beginning with the letter just typed in
cell A1, as is the case in normal inputting.
In my opinion it should be more useful, if in the case of inputting into
cells with a validation list (A1) Excel would take the value offered for
input not from column A, but from the source of the validation list. E.g.
typing letter "B" int cell A1 should result in offering the first value of
the source beginning with "B", simultaneously displaying the validation drop
down list positioned on the value offered.

Stefi

Default validation list

Stefi,

The closest you can come to that easily is to put a copy of the validation list into the cells
immediately above your data entry area. Then, if you have a contiguous block, Autocomplete will
offer up the first unique item....

Default validation list

It's a nice workaround, Bernie, but a tedious one, and might require
reconstructing the whole sheet to create space for the copy of the validation
list.
I intended my post as a suggestion to the developers, it seems that I
selected the wrong type of message.
Thanks anyway!

Stefi

Have a look at Debra Dalgleish's site for instructions on using a combo-box with
DV.

Allows for autocomplete.
