Default Long time to open spreadsheet (running Excel 2007)

If I doubleclick on an .xls file it takes about 2 minutes to open the file
(this is true whether or not Excel is running) Yet when I launch Excel and
"open" any of the same files it is as normal.

I have taken to "save to desktop" any files I get in mail now - this is
somewhat inconvenient!

Many thanks
