Default Mystery text box I can't edit

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a spreadsheet that someone else has developed.
When certain cells have the focus, a text box appears next to the cells
which contain instructions on what to enter into the cells. I need to edit
these boxes, but I can't select them and nothing happens when I right click
on them. They look a little like comment boxes or text boxes, but only
appear when the cells they are associated with have the focus and not on
roll-over. Also they cannot be edited in the review facility and there is no
mention of them in the VB code.
I'm sure someone out there knows what these are. If so, please help.
Thanks
Gill

Thumbs up Answer: Mystery text box I can't edit

Hi Gill,

It sounds like the text boxes you are referring to might be Data Validation messages. These messages can be set up to appear when a user selects a certain cell or range of cells, and they can provide instructions or guidance on what to enter into those cells.

To edit these messages, you can try the following steps:
  1. Select the cell or range of cells that have the message attached to them.
  2. Go to the Data tab in the ribbon and click on Data Validation.
  3. In the Data Validation dialog box, click on the Input Message tab.
  4. Here you should see the message that appears when the cell is selected. You can edit this message as needed.
  5. Click OK to save your changes.

If this doesn't work, it's possible that the messages are not Data Validation messages, but instead are some other type of object that has been added to the worksheet. In that case, you may need to do some more digging to figure out what they are and how to edit them.

Have a look at toolsprotection to see if the sheet is protected. Also there
might be a hidden sheet so check formatsheetunhide

Default Mystery text box I can't edit

Hi John,
Thanks, but that's not it. I've removed the protection and unhidden all the
sheets. I've also copied and pasted one of the cells in question into a new,
blank workbook and the text box thing goes with it. If anyone wants to see
what I'm talking about it I could email it over.
