Default delete a cell

I know these is probably a stupid question but it is frustrating me severely.
I am trying to delete a cell, but when you right click and click delete the
options to shift the cells are grayed out. the only options you can select
are to delete an entire row or column. also, the page is protected which i
thought was my problem at first.

thanks

I can't delete, are you telling me it's not possible? I thought the delete
key just clear the contents but did not actually "delete" the cell.

Default delete a cell

Do you have anything "special" applied to the range with that cell in it?

Is the data filtered?
Is that cell in a list (data|list in xl2003+)
Are any worksheets grouped?
Is the worksheet protected? If yes, what options?
Do you use merged cells?

What version of excel are you using?

The more information you share, the better(?) responses you'll get.
