message saying "too many different cells to format" and this is also

You can have roughly 4000 individual formatting combinations in a workbook. Excel creates
something called a style, as I understand it, for each combination, then points each cell to
a style. That way, it doesn't have to store the individual format combinations in each
cell. That'd take a lot of storage. That's just the way it is.

You might try deleting (Edit - Delete, not just the delete key) all the rows and columns
beyond your data area. There may be styles you're not using any more. Save, close and
reopen the worksheet and see how it goes.
