Default only numbers in a colum are seen-no cells-no little squares

How to correct this & reason it happened--it was fine until i started messing
with it.

maybe try
tools,options,gridlines

Default only numbers in a colum are seen-no cells-no little squares

Another option is Format/ Cells/ Patterns, as a background colour (even
white) will obscure gridlines (but not borders).
