Default Task Pane in Excel 2007

There no longer appears to be a task pane in Excel 2007. If it's still
there, how do I turn it on? If not, is there a way to display my recent
files list at startup like every other Office app does?

Default Task Pane in Excel 2007

Recent files are shown on the Office menu in all Office 2007 apps that use
the ribbon. The Office menu is accessed through the circular button in the
top left corner.
