I have several sets of similar data for different species of birds. I would
like to be able to associate a new chart title for each new data set (range)
entered. Can this be done in excel?

Thus i could easily switch from data set to data set, just by putting in the
ranges and the chart title would change automatically.

It would be easier to link to one cell, and update that cell formulaically,
or paste the new values into the same range used by the chart..

To link a chart text element to a cell, select the text element so its gray
border appears, type = in the formula bar, and click on the cell.

Thanks for your swift reply. I tried linking the title to the cell, however,
unlike other spreadsheet programs, when i shift the data range, the linked
cell stays constant, rather than shifting to an analogous position in the new
range where i entered the new appropriate title.

Could you please explain a bit more what you mean when you state:

Set up the data on Sheet 1, with the title in cell C1. Make the chart using
this data, with the chart title linked to Sheet1!$C$1.

When you want to chart other data, paste it into the appropriate range of
Sheet 1, with the new title in Sheet1!C1.

If you don't want to erase the previous data, make a copy of sheet 1. The
chart's data, and the linked title, will now relate to Sheet1 (2), the copy
of the original sheet.

Your answer inspired us to do the following:

Designate a given range (say A1..Y10) as the "template" range for a given
chart type. The title is assigned a specific cell (say A1). Outside of this
range we have a copy of the data and all the other data sets, each with a
chart title in the appropriate relative position.

Then, to see how any set of data looks in our chart format, we just copy &
paste it into the "chart template" data range which the chart is reading for
its display.
