Default Date Settings

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to change the date settings.
When I type month-year (eg-Sept-01) into a cell, it automatically gets
converted to 1-Sept and I cannot make a chart with month-year as a result.
How would I go about changing this? Any help would be great...

Default Date Settings

Highlight the desired cells...
Got to Format-Cells
Select Date, and select the one that shows Mar-98.
That should do it...
