Default Excel wildcard ? for replacing strings in dropdown function

When I use the find/replace the "?" replaces characters in a string. Example:

Cells: abcd, abdf, abxs, abrd.....
Find: ab?? Replace with :bc?? This results with all cells: bc??

How can I use the wildcard so that the results of the replace a bccd,
bcdf, bcxs, bcrd... without having Excel replace the last part of the string
with ??. I can't find a help screen that describes this option ? in
repplacing. This work fine in WORD.
