Default Excel security updates

One thing you can try is ...

Go to Start | Run | Type services.msc | Search for office source engine
It should be set to automatic.

Proceed at your own risk!

I followed the pathway you suggested and discovered that the office source
engine is set to manual. I could set it to automatic but your final sentence
"proceed at own risk" is a bit of a worry.

I have never had any problems installing updates before, why would it start
behaving in this fashion now? I have never even been into the Office Source
Engine area before so I can only assume it has been set on manual up to now
and the updates have been installing without a whimper.

Computers are like cars. I know how to turn them on and drive them but as
soon as something goes wrong I am lost and it is very frustrating.

At the time of your original message...
I did not know what operating system you were using.
I did not know if the operating system and office programs were legal and fully complete.
I did not know if you were on a network or had a stand alone unit.
I did not know if you had permission to make the change suggested.
I did not know if you could follow the instructions without changing some other
setting that you shouldn't.
I did not know if you understood slang/idioms of the English language.

I do know that the Services dialog box is very useful, particularly in preventing
unneeded services (that bog down windows) from starting.
I do know that the recommendation I made allowed Office 2003 SP2 to
install on my machine, after twice refusing to install. (windows XP)
I do know that I know very little about Windows.
