Default Excel Fill In not shut off.

We are using Windows XP and Excel 2003 - I have a shared workbook - and when
a task has been completed - we fill in the color for that row - just by
highlighting the cells we want filled in and click on the fill in drop down
button and choose a different color(other than yellow). The problem is when
you go to type in the cells below that - and hit enter or tab - that cell is
then filled with the same color.

I have highlighted a few rows below it and click on the no fill option but
it didn't work for long.

Is there something we are doing wrong - or is it because we have filled in
the last row in the list and it wants to fill in whatever is added after that.
