I received an Excel file (.xls) by email attachment, version unknown (I
have 2000). In it, some cells are 9pt and some 10pt, without clear
reason except it sometimes occurs on a few (but not all) entries in one
record. When I suggested that the sender go through and reset the font,
they responded that it has to do with the receiving end. Is there any
basis for that claim?

I've never seen xl do this on its own. And I've never seen just
sending/receiving an email change the format of any cell.

But I have seen users modify characters in cells so that some are bold, some are
underlined, some are italicized, some are even different size (than the rest).

I sometimes change the color and boldness to highlight a specific word.

(I'd blame the sender <bg.)

But if you just want all the font the same size, just hit ctlr-a (twice when you
get to xl2003) and change the font size yourself.
