Default changing the width of a cell without affecting cells above or belo

This is not possible.

Every cell in the same column must be the same width and every cell in the
same row must be the same height.

As a *LAST RESORT* you could merge cells but this *almost ALWAYS* causes
unforeseen problems!

I want to change the width of certain cells in one row without affecting
the
width of the cells in the rows above and below this row. Is this
possible?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
