Default What to do if the worksheet is locked on selecting rows or cells?

In Excel, sometimes when I am selecting rows or cells, the worksheet locks
and if I try to move the cursor all I do is select more rows or cells.
Nothing else works. So far the only way I have found to get out of this is
to reboot the whole computer. What am I doing wrong and how can I get out of
this mode without rebooting?

Most often caused by hitting the F8 key and putting yourself into "Extended
Mode".

If you see EXT on status bar hit F8 again to clear.

Another fix can be tapping the wheel on your wheelie-mouse a few times.

Dave Peterson usually advises:

"Do you see EXT (short for Extend) on the status bar?

If yes, try hitting F8 to toggle this setting. Some have complained that
sticky
mouses can do this.

Try gently(!) banging on all the buttons--including the wheelmouse button."
