Here's a new one.
A colleague just asked me if Excel could be installed on a USB keyfob. My gut says no but I'm curious to hear from others. Storage space wouldn't be the issue (it's a 2 gb keyfob). I've never heard of applications being run off USB storage devices though. Thoughts? Dave -- Brevity is the soul of wit. |

Hi, Dave-
I bet you could install it on the thumb drive, but software installation is more than just storing the exe file: there are hooks into the computer's registry, for instance. This is just a guess: you could install and run it from the USB device, but likely only run it on that machine. And if a program is on the registry but the computer or registry doesn't locate that software (for instance, if that USB device was not installed) I'm not sure if error messages would result, or what. Let us know if you try! |

![]() I have a 2GB Iomega thumb (mini) drive where I downloaded OO so I could run spreadsheets on machines that don't have XL. Iomega calls this feature "Active Disk", and you can download many different programs to the thumb drive and take them along with you. http://www.iomega-activedisk.com/landing.jsp Never tried to use the sites download feature on any other brand. Might work ? ! ? ! -- Regards, RD ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please keep all correspondence within the Group, so all may benefit ! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Dave F" wrote in message ... The installation process for Excel includes making a large number of registry
setting entries which would not be possible on your USB drive... sorry... -- HTH... Jim Thomlinson "Dave F" wrote: Here's a new one. It's a Dave thread!
I'd _guess_ what Dave O. wrote will represent a problem. But maybe one day... There's supposed to be a USB drive/software that's made for this kind of thing: http://www.u3.com (maybe one day (hehe) they'll support excel) But instead of going back empty handed, share this site with your colleague: http://portableapps.com/ A version of OpenOffice is listed! I've been interested in the same thing for some time and have run in to all
the same problems as described above here with Excel. Some old programs I use, like Paint Shop Pro 7 can be done that way, and it's real handy to have with you when you need it.........now I'm looking in to seeing if I can put a whole Operating System on a Jump Drive to actually boot from it, and then maybe Office could be put there too.....anybody seen/heard of doing that? For me, that would be the untimate. Vaya con Dios, Chuck, CABGx3 "Dave F" wrote: Here's a new one. A colleague just asked me if Excel could be installed on a USB keyfob. If you search google for "bootable jump drive", you'll get lots of hits.
Nope, I haven't tried it. <bg CLR wrote: I've been interested in the same thing for some time and have run in to all the same problems as described above here with Excel.
