Default Validation protection

Is there a way to protect a cell so if there is a validation rule, where only
a value from a list can be entered, you are unable to paste invalid data into
this cell.

I have tried protectin the workshhet, workbook etc, but it still allows me
to copy external data and paste into the column with the validation rule
regardless of whether or not it falls in the validation list.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

You are on the right track! Check to see if the cell is protected, Goto
Format cell Protect Check to protect. Next when you place your Data

Validation make sure there is a check mark in "Error Alert" tab "Show error
alert after invalid data is entered". Now protect the sheet via tools
protect.
I am using xl2k and this worked for me.

Does this help you?

Mike

If I protect the cells, where the validation is, then protect the workbook,
yes it wont let me paste the data into the cell, but it also wont allow me to
select an item from the drop down list.

Many thanks
