Default Text not appearing as typed in Excel

I am trying to type in "/" in excel 2003, but it keeps showing up as "È" How
do i correct this?

/ usually triggers the menus. Try putting an apostrophe in front of it: '/

You have an item in ToolsAutoCorrect Options that does the deed?

Delete it.
