How to convert data in General Format cells to dates

I have a sheet with many cells set to General Format containing "dates" in
the form "20060913". Is it possible to select all these cells and convert
the data to show the date in the form mm/dd/yyyy?

Would appreciate your help.

It's a good method but needs a minor alteration: use the YMD date
format in step 3 of Text To Columns.

All this does is to move the alignment from left to right, everthing else
remains the same!

I have tried both delimited and fixed width setting for the original data
with the same result.

Am I doing something wrong?

Yes, you should have chosen YMD, not MDY.
