Default Excel query

I need to total up numbers in a column which correspond to a particular key
(e.g. number 1 = attended event, 2 = refused invitation etc); I need a
formula which selects particular numbers and ignores others so that I can get
an accurate total (all number 1s = all those who attended an event).

With the data in column A,
=COUNTIF(A:A,1) will count all the 1's
