Default Some Excel spreadsheet cells have a red star on the left side of the cell

Hi

A few cells in a spreadsheet (that is being used as an address book)
have a single red star each on the left side of the cell.

I cannot delete these red starts. If I copy the cell, the new cell also
has the red star.

I am using Excel 2002.

Can anyone advise why these red stars are appearing in some of the
cells?

I think these are smart tags, an annoying feature put in by MSFT to highlight
various attributes of cells.
