Default pivot table formatting

I'm using Excel 2003. I have selected "preserve formatting" and deselected
"auto format", then I change the column widths by dragging or by using the
format pull-down (doesn't matter which), save the file and refresh the pivot,
but everything goes back to whatever they were before I fixed them.
If creating a macro is really the only solution (since the above is what I
found in this forum, but none of it works), could someone please explain how
to "create a macro" to solve this?
Sooooo frustrating ........
