Default Excel is changing the comma symbol in formulas to a square box ?

Excel won't accept the comma symbol "," in formulas. when I load
spreadsheets with formulas containing commas, it changes them to small square
boxes, it's like it doesn't recognise the comma anymore !! I am using Excell
2003.

Does anyone know why this is happening?
