If you don't have Excel installed, you can't open Excel files. MS
does provide a free viewer that will allow you to view and print,
but not modify, and xls file.

See

Don't open the file directly from the DVD. First, copy the file
from the DVD to your hard drive, and then open the file from
there.

Most other spreadsheet programs will open .XLS files these days, though
with varying degrees of success in preserving formatting and array
formulas. OpenOffice.org does the best job among the free/open source
offerings.
