Default Absolute Reference

Is there a way to change Absolute Reference so that it is NOT the default for
linking to another workbook? Most of the time I want to link rows or columns
of data from another workbook (as part of a calculation). I would like to
enter the calculation by linking to the first cell and dragging the formula;
but I must remember to take out the Absolute Reference each time. I do this
a lot.
