=SUM(COUNTIF(B1,"*"&mylist&"*")) -- highlights just the first colum.

What I wanted was the whole row to highlight so that it REALLY stands
out. A little tweaking of your formula, and I got EXACTLY what I
wanted:
=SUM(COUNTIF($B1,"*"&mylist&"*"))
