Default Computer freezes when i save excel file to floppy disk.

My co-worker has an older computer that he is trying to use. And when he has
an excel file open and tries to save his file to a floppy disk the whole
computer freezes and the entire computer needs to be rebooted. This doesn't
happen with any other program that we're aware of. Any ideas??

If you honestly mean a floppy disk, you are talking about a disk that takes
something like 180 Kb or 360Kb, if I remember correctly! I do not blame the
PC for freezing! An empty Excel file already takes up about 13Kb! How much
memory does this PC have - RAM that is. Most likely something like 16 or 32
Mb? Get a memory stick, or even better, upgrade to a proper PC

Are there any ideas that actually help instead of are sarcasm?

Christy -

Here's an idea: Browse to Google Groups and search for "save excel file to
floppy disk" (without the quotes).

Or, in Excel save to the hard drive, and use Explorer to copy the file from
hard drive to floppy.

At the other computer, use Explorer to copy the file from floppy to hard
drive, and in Excel open the file from the hard drive.

Christy

Saving directly to or opening directly from a floppy disk is asking for trouble.

Corruption is usually the result.

Always save the file to hard drive then copy over to floppy.

Same when opening......copy to hard drive, then open.

The freezing could be caused by trying to save too much onto the floppy(which
Kassie was getting at). I think she forgot about 1.44mb hard floppies and was
maybe remembering the old 5 1/2 inch "floppies" from the olden days.

Thank you! I had thought about saving from the explorer window to explorer
window...but was curious about why it would be causing it to freeze like
that. Everytime he has done this the file has been less than the floppy disk
itself (80kb as opposed to the 1.44Mb the disk can handle). I have been
trying to break him of the floppy disk habit and use his USB port, but he
gets stuck in his ways sometimes. So thank you to both Gord and Mark for your
ideas!
