Problems Opening Excel file
 

I have an Excel file that is 2.87 MB, which doesn't seem too terribly large.
However, when I go to open it, it takes _forever_, so to speak, and ends up
locking up most my system sometimes. I have about 36 GB of free space on my
hard drive, and am not sure why the file is taking so long to open. Any
suggestions?

My OS info is as follows:

Microsoft Windows 2000
5.00.2195
Service Pack 4

653,296 KB RAM

I have Office 2003.

The doc is stored on my desktop. I have this problem whether I am running
other programs, or not.

What specifically is in the workbook? Pivot tables, plots, etc?

I've had this problum before as well and there could be several things that
is slowing your file from opening.

Did you recently delete something?
If you did some of your formulas could still be trying to "refrence"
your deleted data. To search to see if you have errors like this go to one of
your worksheets go to "EDIT" then "FIND" (Find won't show up on the edit list
if you are on a chart) Then to check your workbook go to options and change
"worksheet" to "workbook". The rest can be as is("rows" and "formulas") If
you have formulas in your workbook then make sure you leave "Formulas" there.
It may not always show up in the cell value!
Did you move something?
If you cut something out or moved something from one book to another
like a worksheet, the cells that were linked to that moved sheets or data may
have followed it! So you may have "links" in your workbooks. This slows it
down, a little, but if you were to delete that other workbook you moved the
sheet from it slows it down a lot! It is trying to find a workbook that
doesn't exsist anymore becuase of the link! To fix this go to "Find" (like i
said previously) and simply look up "[", this is becuase a bracket signifies
a link to another workbook. So if you added brackets to your information,
that could also be the problum.

Apparently, the problem was that I did not have a service pack loaded. I
corrected this and now it opens fine.
