Default Excel's handling of Unicode

I have just exported data from a web based application and it is coming
across with special characters. it is as if Excel cannot handle
aprostrophes etc

e.g Finance - other is coming across as Finance €“ Other

There are pound signs, A's and paragraph signs.
Please help

Many thanks
Dapo
