Default Scatter Chart with Smoothed Lines

Does anyone know what function Excel uses to create smooth lines connecting
the points in a scatter plot? Is it a cubic spline?

Near the bottom of this page, Brian Murphy of XLRotor claims it's a Bezier
curve:

He's done a bunch of analysis to back it up.

Excellent! Given that Excel is calculating the Bezier curves, why isn't this
excellent interpolating tool offerred as a standard function?

I'm sure it's because the built-in bezier drawing routines are buried so
deep, it would be a huge effort to extract any of the information, and
translate it into chart axis scales.
