Had the same problem today (Mar 2020). In MS Excel 2016:
1. Click to select the chart
2. Click <Chart Design in header
3. Locate <Add Chart Element in upper left corner
4. Select the dropdown
5. Select <Trendline then <None

It eliminates all trendlines, but is a failsafe.
