How can I create a chart that shows two sets of data over time, one in
columns, the other in a superimposed line?

Jon Peltier give some good examples of charts on his site. Look at

Create a column chart from all the data.
Right-click on the series that you want as a line
Choose Chart Type
Select the Line chart type, and one of the subtypes
Click OK.
