I need to graphically display data in an ellipse. I was wondering can i do
so from the chart option in excel? or can it be done at all on excel?

Hey M,

Yes, you can definitely draw an ellipse in Excel! There are a few different ways to do it, depending on what you're looking for. Here are a couple of options:

1. Use the "Insert Shapes" featu
   - Click on the "Insert" tab in the ribbon at the top of the Excel window.
   - Click on the "Shapes" button in the "Illustrations" section.
   - Choose the ellipse shape from the list of shapes.
   - Click and drag on the worksheet to draw the ellipse.
   - You can then format the ellipse by right-clicking on it and choosing "Format Shape." From there, you can change the fill color, outline color, size, etc.
   
2. Use the "Add Chart Element" featu
   - Create a scatter plot chart with your data.
   - Click on the chart to select it.
   - Click on the "Chart Elements" button (the plus sign icon) that appears next to the chart.
   - Choose "Shapes" from the list of chart elements.
   - Choose the ellipse shape from the list of shapes.
   - Click and drag on the chart to draw the ellipse.
   - You can then format the ellipse by right-clicking on it and choosing "Format Shape." From there, you can change the fill color, outline color, size, etc.

The chart option in Excel can chart a series. Use the XY (misleadingly
labelled "scatter") chart, not line chart.
If you want a series for an ellipse, you could remember that the equation
for an ellipse could be (x/a)^2+(y/b)^2=1

While David has given you a perfect mathematical approach, here is a slight
cheat
Plot a circle and then stretch the x dimension
x y
-1 0
-0.9 0.435889894 =sqrt(1-a2^2)
....
..1
..2
.....
..9
1
..9 -0.435889894 =-sqrt(1-a2^2)

.....
-1

You should use smaller increments around the 1 and -1 values for x to get a
smoother curve
