Default intials from names

Hi
In A and B are the last and first names of patients. How can one display
only the first letter of the name in the chart or perhaps in another cell?
i.e. Smith John 126 pounds SJ 126

A1 has: Smith
B1 has: John
In D1 use =LEFT(A1)&LEFT(B1) to get: SJ
best wishes
