Default x-axis labels desappear if the chart is too big

I have to plot a series of small numbers (around 1e-14) in a scatter chart.
The resulting plot shows no labels on the x-axis (excepted for the first
one), but they reappear if the horizontal size of the chart window is
decreased. The smaller the values, the more the size has to be reduced.
Has somebody already solved this problem?

Not quite sure what is going on but you could tell Excel not to change the
size of the labels when the chart resizes. Double-click the x-axis and in
the Font tab uncheck 'Auto scale'

I forgot to write that I'm using Excel 2007. The corresponding field is gray
and I cannot check or uncheck it.
