If by 'the second bit' you mean
Application.ScreenUpdating = True
this gives control back to Excel, meaning that the screen will now
update whenever it changes. Depending on your code, you may want to turn
it off and on several or even many times in a block of code, if you
don't want the user to see what's happening at some stages but you do
want them to see what's happening at other stages.
If there's a lot happening with your code, it also speeds things up a
little since there's no delays waiting for the screen to update.
