Default cannot open and can not delete files

You may have an instance of Excel still running in the
background. Open up the task manager and make sure an
instance is not there. If there is one, kill it. Then try
deleting the file. If that doesn't help, try booting into
dos, and deleting the file from there. (that always works
for me)

When I was trying to delete the files that I could not
open, I got the following error message:
Cannot delete xxxx.xls: There has been a sharing

violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.

Any input on how to delete the files?
.
