AFAIK, Excel deletes the backup files when the file is closed normally,
certainly when Excel is closed normally.

There is a utility available at

http://www.jkp-ads.com/Download.htm

called autosafe, but it, too, deletes the backup files when Excel closes
normally.

Consider it an expensive lesson in regularly saving your work.
