Make sure you visit Office Update & apply all Service packs. There were a
bunch of regional settings "fixes", maybe one will help you.

all previous Excel 2000 files/worksheets are now set/open as $s and

modifying manaully.

Have just upgrade to 2003 and alll my old .xls files now appear as $s
I choose UK ~ Striling when upgrading/install 2003
I'd rather not have to open & convert each individually...
