In fact the opposite is true. 2007 with it's 'million' rows opens faster and
takes up less space on the disk than previous versions of Excel.

Slow opening is usually due to some fancy links in your spreadsheet. Check
Data -- Edit links and make sure all your links refer to valid paths.
