Default formatting colour in cells when one cell contains a character

a, b c etc are not cells. Those are columns only.

Please describe what cells or range is to be colored when a particular cell
has a character inserted.

In your description please use real cell addresses like A1:F10 and G1

Any character inserted or a specific character?
