Excel treat ENTER as "I have ended what I want in this cell"
If you format a cell (or column) width and type in it, and then set Text
Warp on, then the text will jump to a new line when you exceed the width.

Thank you. I got that part. I want to format all cells to automatically
give
me a line return when I hit enter, not move to another cell. I want it to
do
what it does in a table in Word.

You can insert a line return by holding down ALT while pressing ENTER
(this
is called 'text wrap')
Sometimes you then nee to format the cell to permit text wrap
