When you open Excel you will see a worksheet that looks like a sheet of
graph paper with rows and columns of rectangular boxes. You can do just
about anything with these boxes.

You can think of each box as a "pigeonhole" in an old timey mail sorting
office. You can put anything in these boxes: text, formulas, phone numbers,
whatever.

Each "box" ("cell" in Excel nomenclature) is identified by a unique address
(like your home's street address) comprised of its row number and column
number. The row number is the number of the row from the top of the page
that the cell is in. The column number is the number of the column from the
left of the page that the cell is in; usually the columns use an
alphabetical identification, not numerical.

Try opening Excel and check it out.
